Savannah Bananas set to perform in The Bronx for the first time

Savannah Bananas to Play at Yankee Stadium

This weekend, as the Yankees face off against the Red Sox in Boston—after a victory on Friday night—the spotlight also shines on an unusual event in New York. The Yankees are aiming to secure their spot in the playoffs, but simultaneously, a unique baseball experience is drawing nearly 100,000 fans to Yankee Stadium.

For the first time ever, Georgia’s Savannah Bananas, a barnstorming team, are set to play an exhibition game at the historic stadium, much to the excitement of fans. “This was one of the most in-demand tickets we’ve had,” noted Tony Bruno, a senior VP at Yankee Global Enterprises, reflecting on the phenomenon the Bananas have become.

The team mainly comprises former college and minor league players with a flair for entertainment, bringing their unique style to various MLB venues. Luke Weaver, a player, expressed that it’s “fun to watch” because of their trick plays and different approach to the game, comparing them to the iconic Harlem Globetrotters.

“It’s another way to approach the sport,” he added. “I think it’s good for baseball to have this twist.” Initial responses from nationwide audiences have been positive.

While they’ve performed in traditional baseball hubs like Boston and St. Louis, this weekend marks their New York debut. Team president Jared Orton shared his enthusiasm, stating, “That’s a big deal. Over the past few years, I’ve gained insights collaborating with the Yankees. This opportunity showcases our growth.” The Bananas’ regular venue is Grayson Stadium in Savannah, but this game will feature their fast-paced style, complete with rule modifications like enforced time out of the batter’s box.

Beyond the gameplay, there will be dances, antics, and scripted routines sprinkled throughout, though the outcomes aren’t predetermined, echoing the Globetrotters’ vibe. “We want to entertain our fans,” Orton emphasized, highlighting their mission to make baseball enjoyable. The jump from 4,000 fans at Grayson Stadium to potentially 45,000 at Yankee Stadium is significant.

This transition hasn’t been without its challenges. At first, there was some uncertainty about how major league teams would respond to hosting them, particularly concerning spring training facilities. Orton recounted the initial nerves surrounding their operations, saying, “It’s scary to open your facility for whom I’m.” However, preparations, which they refer to as “rehearsals,” are now fully underway.

If all goes smoothly this weekend, Orton is hopeful for more events in both the Bronx and at Citi Field. The anticipation is growing, especially following Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman’s recent close at Petco Park, with Orton teasing additional surprises in store.

“That’s what makes our brand fun and unique,” he concluded. Their goal? To keep the excitement alive and ensure they never become stale.
