Bill Maher and Ben Shapiro discuss the political connections of Charlie Kirk's assassin

Discussion on the Assassination of Charlie Kirk

On Friday, Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time,” and Ben Shapiro, co-founder of Daily Wire, engaged in a conversation about the suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, and his political affiliations.

Shapiro suggested that it’s possible to analyze threats of violence based on political lines. He argued that authorities apprehended 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, a Utah resident, who is suspected in Kirk’s assassination. The suspect’s casings bore inscriptions like “Heyfascist! Catch!” and “Bellachao,” linking to the Italian anti-fascist anthem from World War II.

Shapiro, a conservative commentator, claimed that the act was representative of leftist ideology.

Who Is Tyler Robinson?

Amidst this discussion, Maher questioned Shapiro’s claims, expressing uncertainty about Robinson’s political identity and saying, “I don’t know what this child is.” He challenged the conclusions being drawn based on limited knowledge, emphasizing that things aren’t as clear-cut as they might seem. “Two days later, we don’t know,” Maher remarked, implying that the internet often reveals misinterpretations right from the start.

Shapiro maintained that his assertions were backed by “actual reports” from mainstream media.

Analyzing Political Narratives

Maher pressed Shapiro on his certainty regarding the left’s involvement, to which Shapiro characterized a far-left group as being comprised of “radical anti-fascist, trans groups,” contrasting them with two right-leaning factions: white supremacists and radical Islamists. He hinted at an imbalance in how these groups are portrayed.

Shapiro laid out a perspective where these movements share a belief that the system is deliberately targeting them, which justifies their use of violence. He noted that this conviction is dangerous. He shared that he had known Kirk for many years and revealed he himself had relied on 24/7 security for nearly a decade during his public engagements. “I never thought we would get to this point,” he admitted.

Following the tragic event, tributes to Kirk have emerged nationally and internationally, including memorials held abroad. Kirk was fatally shot during a speaking engagement on the campus of Utah Valley University. He had co-founded Turning Point USA when he was only 18, and the organization has grown to include over 250,000 student members.

Authorities have expressed confidence that Robinson acted alone in the assassination, and his family revealed that he had become increasingly engaged in political discourse in recent times.
