Current Situation with Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
As of now, there are no changes regarding Angel Reese’s status within her early WNBA career.
When asked about her relationship with Reese, Sky’s general manager Jeff Pagliocca stated, “Until I hear it differently, that’s the direction we move, she’s on the roster.” This was ahead of the season’s end.
Reese, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft, didn’t play half of Sunday’s game after she claimed her previous comments to the Chicago Tribune were “harmful to the team.”
In her interview with The Tribune, the LSU product emphasized that she wouldn’t “settle for the same S-T this year” and acknowledged that she could pursue “the best for me” if things didn’t change.
Pagliocca’s remarks suggest that trade possibilities for Reese are still on the table during the offseason.
After her recent suspension, Reese didn’t take the court and the Sky listed her with a back injury for her last three games, which raised concerns about the state of her relationship with the organization.
Pagliocca downplayed these worries on Friday.
“Angel is a rising young talent in this league and had two very good seasons here in Chicago,” he noted. “We went through something, and it feels like we’ve closed that chapter. She’s spoken with her teammates, publicly addressed the issue, and we’re moving forward as a team. She’s a special player.”
Following this, Reese has apologized both publicly and to her team.
Just hours after Chicago’s season ended with a loss to the Liberty, Reese boarded a private jet for a postseason trip.
Reese remains on her rookie contract for two more years before she can enter restricted free agency.
However, this offseason could see significant changes across the WNBA.
The league and WNBPA are currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with a deadline of October 31st. Players are pushing for improved facilities, better benefits, and increased pay growth along with revenue sharing.
Consequently, many players signed one-year contracts this season, which might lead to a flurry of free agency chaos, especially during the allocation of players to expansion teams in Toronto and Portland.
The Sky has faced struggles in the past two years, posting a record of 13-27 in Reese’s rookie year. With manager Teresa Weatherspoon at the helm for just one season, the team dropped to 10-34 this year, earning the worst record in the league.
This season, the Sky was 1-13 in games without Reese, and both years she’s been with the team, they have missed the playoffs.
In 30 games this season, Reese averaged 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds, leading the WNBA in rebounds for the second consecutive year.
