Disneyland to Replace Gas-Powered Autopia with Electric Vehicles
Disneyland is set to retire one of its long-time gas guzzlers. The park in Anaheim will replace the gas-operated vehicles at the Autopia attraction with fully electric options. This change marks the end of nearly 70 years of emissions at Tomorrowland, following California’s tightening regulations on emissions across the state.
Park officials announced that they’ve reached an agreement with the California Air Resources Board to phase out the gas-powered Autopia engine by early 2027. This decision aligns with California’s ambitious goals to reduce emissions from gas-powered vehicles and appliances.
At present, Disneyland is in the process of “designing, engineering, and testing” a prototype for the new electric Autopia ride. While further details about the renovation will be shared soon, specific closure and reopening dates have yet to be revealed. The park had initially mentioned plans in 2024 to convert Autopia to electric by the fall of 2026.
Part of a broader environmental strategy, Disneyland emphasizes the switch to electric vehicles as a vital initiative. The theme park aims for net-zero emissions by 2030, increasing its reliance on renewable energy sources.
Autopia has been a fixture since Disneyland’s opening in 1955 and has experienced several revamps over the years. The last significant renovation occurred in 2016 when Honda took on the role of vehicle sponsor, previously held by companies like Chevron and Litchfield Oil.
As Disneyland’s sponsorship agreement with Honda will expire in 2026, it seems like a fitting time for the transition to electric vehicles. Other Disney parks around the globe have already moved away from traditional gas-powered attractions. For example, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Autopia featured electric cars with audio and lighting effects, while Tokyo Disneyland shut down its Grand Circuit Raceway attraction back in 2017.
With the electrification of Autopia, Disneyland hopes to lead by example in its environmental efforts, making strides towards a more sustainable future.
