Dan Lanning Reacts to Tragic Death of Charlie Kirk

Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning expressed his sorrow over the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk. After his team defeated Northwestern 34-14 on Saturday, Lanning reached out to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their two kids, sharing his condolences.

Reflecting on the broader cultural issues faced by Americans today, Lanning noted the lessons that could be learned from the camaraderie in his locker room, emphasizing, “People in this world can learn a lot from it.” The message seemed to resonate with the occasion.

Earlier, he candidly discussed gun violence, expressing outrage at the “evil” circumstances surrounding Kirk’s death and the impact on families, especially children. “I had no idea that Charlie was an Oregon fan. This news devastated his wife and kids. Such violence should never plague our society,” Lanning stated. He found it troubling to explain such tragedies to his own family.

He continued, “Every day, we hear about violence affecting children, be it in schools or places of worship. It’s daunting to see life treated so callously.” Lanning later addressed his political opposers, declaring, “I love you. Life is precious, and no family should have to experience this loss.” He called for urgent gun reform to protect children, stressing that every child deserves safety at school.

Highlighting the need for actionable change, he remarked, “It’s imperative we point out evil in our societies and work toward reform. Our children should never have to worry about their safety at school, the most prized aspect of life.”

Currently, Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk’s murder, is in custody, and discussions about mental health and gun control continue to unfold.
