Remembering Charlie Kirk on a College Football Saturday
It’s another beautiful Saturday for college football, but today feels a bit different as we remember a passionate sports fan who isn’t here to enjoy it with us—Charlie Kirk.
This week, the influential activist and media figure tragically lost his life due to a violent incident during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, located in Orem, Utah. His loss has resonated deeply, especially among those who knew him or followed his work.
Kirk was notably recognized for his political endeavors, yet he was also a dedicated fan, particularly of the Oregon Ducks. Oddly enough, he wasn’t from Oregon, but that didn’t stop him from publicly supporting the Ducks and sharing his enthusiasm on social media. In 2024, he even posted a photo with the former Ducks quarterback, expressing his belief that he would make a remarkable Christian husband and an exceptional NFL player.
Today marks the first college football Saturday since his passing. The Ducks were playing not far from where he grew up, against Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. It’s unclear what specific plans he would have had for a game like this; I mean, he likely would have adjusted something to make the day special.
Considering Kirk spent much of his career on college campuses, encouraging discussions and supporting like-minded students, it was somewhat disappointing to notice the lack of tributes at many football stadiums. Nevertheless, various student groups did step up to honor him, and undoubtedly, Kirk’s spirit is felt in places like the Oregon locker room this weekend.
The Ducks are back home soon, facing off against the Oregon State Beavers at Autzen Stadium on September 20th. It seems fitting to take a moment to remember the big fans like Kirk who left us far too soon.
