Philadelphia police announce arrest warrants in connection with the murder of a Penn State student

Penn State Student Shot Near Family Home in Philadelphia

Tragedy struck when Penn State student Billy Schmidt was shot near his family’s residence in Philadelphia. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moment he was killed while attempting to get his mobile phone back from two suspects. His sister, Anna Schmidt, made a heartfelt plea for justice amid the mourning gripping Pennsylvania as local authorities continue their search for the assailants responsible for this needless act of violence.

Philadelphia police have issued arrest warrants for two 16-year-old boys linked to Schmidt’s death, which occurred on June 6 after he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends. A spokesperson from the police department mentioned that the names of the suspects are withheld due to their minor status and the fact that they have not yet been charged.

Schmidt, who was 22, was fatally shot around 1:30 a.m. during what investigators are treating as an attempted armed robbery. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a local hospital.

The surveillance video reveals Schmidt shouting, “Give me my phone,” just before the sound of gunfire. It shows a brief chase involving another individual, after which Schmidt is shot in the chest.

Authorities describe the gunman as a black male, between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 5 inches tall, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a light gray camouflage face mask. He was armed with a handgun at the time of the incident.

Police identity the second suspect as being taller, at around 5 feet 8 inches, with braids, and wearing a distinctive light gray hooded sweatshirt featuring skulls and crossbones.

The U.S. Marshals Service has joined in the hunt for the teens, even going so far as to offer a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to their capture.

Billy’s father, Bill Schmidt, shared that his son was walking home from a bar where he had just enjoyed the game with friends. He expressed disbelief that his son would chase after the thieves. “He was a really good guy,” he reflected, “never hurt anyone. For this to happen is just a travesty.”

Anna Schmidt, visibly shaken, remarked, “I miss him so much and I don’t understand how something like this could happen.” Her brother was a journalism student at Penn State World Campus, with plans to graduate in December.

The university released a statement extending its condolences to Billy’s family and friends. Anyone with knowledge regarding the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact the police at 215-686-TIPS.
