UNC Tar Heels Secure First Home Win Under Belichick
The UNC Tar Heels celebrated their inaugural home victory of the Bill Belichick era on Saturday, dominating Richmond 41-6.
Quarterback Gio Lopez had a standout performance, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another. Freshman Demon added a solid 148 rushing yards, also contributing to the scoring.
Both of Lopez’s touchdown passes were caught by Jordan Ship, who finished with four receptions totaling 52 yards.
Lopez completed 10 of 18 passes for 119 yards but did have one interception. Richmond struggled offensively, accumulating only 199 total yards and committing three turnovers, including a crucial fumble that Makai Gubayor returned for a 62-yard touchdown.
The Tar Heels were incredibly effective early on, scoring on their first four possessions. They outpaced Richmond in the first half, with a total yardage advantage of 193-58, leading at halftime 20-3.
Interestingly, Richmond attempted to turn things around by recovering an unexpected onside kick to start the second half. They managed to push down the field but fell short when Kyle Wickersham was stopped on a crucial fourth down run.
Prior to this win, the team had triumphed over Charlotte 20-3, marking Belichick’s first victory as a college football coach, which certainly adds a layer of achievement to this recent win.
This match was notable, not just for the score, but for Belichick’s recent departure from the New England Patriots coaching staff. Reports surfaced that he felt unwelcome at their facilities, leading to this new chapter in his coaching career.
