Laurence Tribe encounters criticism for incorrect ultra-MAGA assassination claim

A well-known law professor at Harvard University faced backlash on social media after suggesting that the individual accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk belonged to the “ultra MAGA” group and that Republicans were attempting to blame liberals for the incident.

Lawrence Tribe made these remarks in a post on X, sharing an extensive message from an account called Occupator that characterized the political leanings of the accused, Tyler Robinson.

“Kirk’s alleged murderer seems to have been part of the super MAGA movement, which undermines GOP/MAGA attempts to hold liberals accountable for this tragedy,” Tribe stated. He served as a professor at Harvard Law School from 1968 until he retired in 2020.

Robinson, aged 22, reportedly has a “romantic relationship” with his transgender partner, as confirmed by a senior FBI official. They reside together in St. George, Utah, with the partner undergoing a transition.

In light of Kirk’s assassination, lawmakers commented on the increasing political violence, stating, “Violent words precede violent actions.”

Kirk was murdered on Wednesday at Utah Valley University while engaging with students during a Turning Point USA event. Reports indicate that moments before the shooting, someone asked Kirk if he was aware of the number of transgender Americans implicated in mass shootings.

Jeremy Carl, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, criticized Tribe’s post on X, accusing him of spreading “absolute” misinformation by claiming Robinson’s support for former President Donald Trump.

“There’s really nothing to see here. A longtime Harvard professor—considered one of the most prominent legal scholars of his time—spreads lies about Kirk’s assassin based on dubious sources,” Carl wrote.

Tribe, who taught for 30 years at Harvard, has participated in various presidential administrations. He was appointed by President Biden in 2021 to a committee for the Supreme Court, and in 2010, President Obama selected him as the first senior counselor for access to justice.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach Tribe and Harvard for comments but did not receive a response.

The Occupational Democrat group, noted as a leading democratic organization on social media, has portrayed Robinson as “a volatile white man with access to firearms,” also calling him a “hardcore MAGA” supporter.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox referred to the murder as a “political assassination,” disclosing that Robinson’s family indicated he had grown more politically active in recent years.

Prior to his murder, Charlie Kirk had warned that “assassination culture is spreading to the left.”

Democratic groups have also attempted to link messages found on bullet casings near the suspect’s weapons to “white nationalists” and video games, suggesting one inscription could be tied to a leftist “Antifa” message and a popular video game.

Among various writings, one casing read “Heyfascist! Catch!” and included other phrases like “Bella Ciao,” the latter an anti-fascist song from World War II.
