One in Four Residents of Gaza City Leaves Before Fight: IDF

Situation in Gaza

Estimates from the Israeli Secretary of Defense indicate that approximately one in four residents of Gaza City evacuated before Israel’s operations targeting Hamas installations.

Israeli forces reported that as of Saturday afternoon, tens of thousands of Palestinians had left Gaza City, raising the total number of evacuees in recent weeks to about 280,000, based on data from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In contrast, the Hamas Civil Defense Agency in Gaza provided significantly lower figures, stating that fewer than 70,000 people successfully fled.

Prior to the IDF’s major military preparations aimed at overtaking key cities and dismantling Hamas remnants, it was estimated that around a million Palestinians lived in Gaza City.

Civilians are currently sheltered in humanitarian zones set up by the IDF in southern Gaza, with Israel aiming to minimize civilian harm while addressing entrenched terrorist threats.

The IDF’s ongoing operation aims to eliminate Hamas’s remaining influence in the Gaza Strip, with lives at stake. However, there is a strong desire to free the remaining 48 Israeli hostages.

This operation, termed “Gideon’s Chariots II,” unfolds amid growing international scrutiny. Western nations are convening in New York to discuss the declaration of a Palestinian state, while Arab nations gather to denounce Israel’s actions against Hamas figures who have sought refuge in Doha, Qatar.

Discussions regarding hostage releases and ceasefires have stalled due to the insistence on Hamas’s disarmament and the broader Israeli military objectives aimed at preventing a recurrence of the events of October 7, 2023.

It seems that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reached a decisive position, asserting that if Hamas does not relinquish power voluntarily, Israel will take action to remove its leadership, wherever they may be located.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Israel to deliberate on forthcoming actions, and will likely express America’s disapproval of Israeli strikes against Qatar, which, despite its ties to terrorism, is viewed as a U.S. ally.
