Construction Workers Rescue Family from House Fire

In a heartwarming display of bravery, three construction workers in Iowa are being hailed as local heroes after they rushed into a burning home to save a family, managing to find and help a teenage boy trapped inside.

Damian Pond and his colleagues from Leick Construction were working nearby when flames erupted from the house around 12:30 PM last Monday. Without a second thought for their own safety, they dashed toward the fire.

As they approached, they could hear distressing screams. They quickly managed to get the mother, grandmother, and a four-year-old girl out safely, but the teenager remained upstairs, still in peril.

Amidst the rescue, Pond recalled hearing an explosion, leaving him no time to assess his injuries as flames licked at his back and singed his face.

Once the women and young child were secure, their attention turned to the teenager, whose situation was growing desperate as smoke thickened around him on the second floor.

In a quick-thinking move, they found a trampoline and positioned it beneath the window where the teenager was trapped. The plan was simple: if he could jump through the window onto the trampoline, he could get to safety.

“So I grabbed the trampoline. My buddy and I dragged it over to the window and got it in place. It was so smoky. Then he jumped out, and we moved him away from the building once he landed on it,” Lewis recounted, relieved that everyone was accounted for.

After the daring rescue, all three men suffered burns and had to seek treatment. Lewis noted that in the chaos, even his hat melted onto his scalp.

The Glenwood Fire Department intends to recognize the trio for their courageous actions, although they humbly feel they were just doing what anyone would do.

“I just did what anyone would,” Pond said. “When you hear a child is in danger, you step up,” Lewis added.

Meanwhile, the community has rallied together, organizing a donation drive for families affected by the fire, collecting essential supplies like blankets and toys.
