Lula from Brazil calls Trump’s tariff ‘political’ and ‘illogical’

Lula Criticizes Trump’s Tariffs on Brazil

Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva recently described President Trump’s 50% tariffs on Brazil as “political” and “illogical” in an opinion piece for the New York Times.

“The increase in tariffs imposed this summer is not only false but also lacks logic,” he stated. “The absence of any real economic justification for these actions indicates that the motivation from the White House is political.”

Lula noted that while most U.S. imports aren’t subject to tariffs in Brazil, the U.S. has maintained a considerable trade and services surplus with Brazil for the past 15 years.

He mentioned a report where Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau suggested to Brazilian business leaders that they should start complying with regulations on social media platforms in Brazil, a country with over 200 million people.

Last week, the conviction of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, seen as an ally of Trump, escalated tensions between Brazil and the U.S. Bolsonaro faced accusations of attempting to instigate a coup following his loss to Lula in 2022.

Trump’s executive order implementing the 50% tariff on July 30 specifically referenced Bolsonaro’s prosecution and the online censorship perceived by the Brazilian government and its Supreme Court.

On Sunday, Lula expressed that his administration is open to engaging in negotiations with the Trump administration for a beneficial trade agreement.

Earlier in the week, the Brazilian Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison related to the failed coup plot. Lula stated that the investigation unveiled plans to target the then-president, vice president, and judges of the Supreme Court.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the U.S. plans to “respond” to the conviction and accused a Brazilian federal court judge of unfairly targeting Bolsonaro.

The Trump administration has criticized American tech companies for alleged unfair digital trading practices and deficiencies in enforcing environmental regulations.

Despite the ongoing disputes, Lula maintained that both countries stand to benefit from improving their relationships. “Turning your back on our 200+ year tradition would harm everyone,” he remarked. “Brazil and the U.S. are two significant nations that can collaborate for the benefit of their people.”
