What is Discord? Gaming app used by the person accused of attacking Charlie Kirk

Discord, a messaging platform favored by gamers, is currently involved in the investigation surrounding Tyler Robinson, who is accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk.

Robinson allegedly shot and killed Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist, on a college campus in Utah last week. His use of the Discord app has raised significant interest from law enforcement as they delve deeper into the case.

Reportedly, Robinson’s legal troubles are compounded by a lack of cooperation from both the suspect and the Utah authorities.

Understanding Discord

With over 200 million monthly users, Discord facilitates communication through text, voice, and video. While it’s known for its popularity among gamers, the platform also attracts various communities for diverse interests.

As outlined by USA Today, interactions on Discord typically occur within “servers,” which function similarly to group chats on Facebook or Instagram. These servers provide spaces for individuals to connect and engage meaningfully.

The Connection to Kirk’s Assassination

Tyler Robinson, 22, is suspected of discussing details of the crime with a roommate on Discord. At a press conference, Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted that Robinson had sent messages about inconsistencies involving weapons, which included remarks about “drop points.”

An affidavit indicates that Robinson’s communications even touched upon unique aspects of the rifle used. The New York Times reported that a friend of Robinson’s recognized him from surveillance footage, and the suspect joked about how someone might think he was trying to get into trouble.

Robinson also expressed a desire to share his reward if anyone from Discord helped identify him. However, a spokesperson clarified that no evidence has surfaced suggesting that the suspect actively promoted violence on Discord.

Perceptions of the Suspect

Residents in Utah have described Robinson as a generally quiet person, which adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.

Concerns Over Discord

Critics argue that Discord’s private channels can promote extremist rhetoric and lack sufficient safeguards for younger users. The 2022 mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, where the perpetrator discussed attack plans on Discord, led to the deletion of that server, highlighting the challenges of monitoring such spaces.

In earlier incidents, a suspect related to former President Donald Trump also faced scrutiny over his use of Discord, although the platform did not appear to play a role in planning the attack. Additionally, New Jersey recently sued Discord for allegedly failing to protect younger users.

In some positive developments, Discord also aided in preventing a potential mass shooting by reporting concerning messages to authorities, leading to an early arrest.

Discord’s Stance on Hate Speech

Discord has stated that it prohibits hate speech and harmful behavior on its platform. The company is firm in its definition of hate speech, including any rhetoric that degrades individuals or incites hostility.

Minimum Age for Usage

To use Discord, individuals must be at least 13 years old in the US and several other countries, although some locations have raised the minimum age requirement.
