What is Discord? Gaming app used by the person accused of attacking Charlie Kirk

Discord, a popular messaging app especially favored by gamers, is now under scrutiny in relation to Tyler Robinson, the individual accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Robinson, who shot and killed 31-year-old Kirk last week, was apprehended while on the campus of Utah Valley University. The role of the Discord app has piqued the interest of law enforcement, as it might hold vital information regarding the circumstances of the assassination.

News surrounding Robinson’s case has gained traction, with some officials expressing concerns about cooperation regarding investigations. Governor Spencer Cox mentioned that Robinson had communicated inconsistencies about moving rifles from certain locations.

In an affidavit, it was noted that Robinson discussed specific details about bullets and peculiarities regarding the rifle’s scope. Reports indicate that a roommate of Robinson seemed to recognize him from surveillance footage and communicated about it on Discord, suggesting a misleading attempt at humor on Robinson’s part.

A spokesperson for Discord stated that they had identified an account belonging to the suspect but had not found evidence of any violent promotion or planning through the platform. They mentioned that messages relating to weapon searches might have been sent via a different messaging service.

In light of the incident, there’s been some backlash aimed at Discord. Critics argue that the platform’s private channels may foster extremist rhetoric and do not sufficiently protect younger users. Past incidents, including those related to violent acts of hate, have drawn attention to how social media can inadvertently become a breeding ground for planned attacks.

In response to concerns about hate speech, Discord maintains a strict policy against such behavior, stating: “We do not allow the use of hate or hate speech.” Additionally, the platform has set the minimum age for users at 13 years old, although that may vary in some countries.
