Impact of Charlie Kirk’s Assassination on Young People in Arizona

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, has deeply resonated with young people in Arizona, home to his organization. Turning Point Action, the political division of TPUSA, played a significant role in the competitive 2024 elections in the Grand Canyon State.

A recent voter analysis revealed that 48% of individuals aged 18-29 supported President Donald Trump in Arizona, while former Vice President Kamala Harris garnered a slight edge with 51%. Nevertheless, Trump ultimately secured the state with over 52% of the votes.

Turning Point USA announced that following Kirk’s assassination, they anticipate a surge in campus chapters, with projections suggesting they could exceed 32,000.

The state features several large universities, including well-known private Christian institutions like Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. In response to Kirk’s death, Arizona College Republicans and TPUSA are organizing a substantial vigil on Monday night, reportedly attracting around 10,000 registrants.

Jordan Obesson, 23, and Chandler Buchanan shared their sentiments outside the Hansen Funeral Chapel in Phoenix, where Kirk’s body is being held. “He meant a lot to me—he really helped young people find their voices regarding faith and politics. Many young people struggle to articulate their beliefs, and Charlie provided guidance,” Obesson remarked.

There’s a sense that after Kirk’s assassination, the “sleeping giant” of youth engagement has stirred. Buchanan noted, “I didn’t know much about him until he spoke at Grand Canyon University last year. His messages about faith truly resonate with us.” He also expressed hope that this tragedy might lead others to deepen their faith and understanding of their beliefs.

Since the incident, TPUSA has recorded 37,000 new chapter requests. The organization already includes approximately 900 university and 1,200 high school branches, with a notable increase in job and volunteer inquiries. “I’ve received countless offers from people wanting to help, whether by working or volunteering,” said TPUSA spokesman Andrew Corvette.

Interestingly, voices critical of Trump have commended Charlie Kirk’s influence, remarking on his political approach. His life celebration is set for Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with Trump planning to attend. Hotels in the area are fully booked for that weekend.

His wife, Erica Kirk, in her first public statement since the tragedy, has urged people to engage in Christian faith and participate in Turning Point USA as a way to honor her husband’s legacy. “The movement my husband started will endure,” she asserted. “I refuse to let it fade into memory. My husband’s name will not be forgotten, and it will only grow stronger.”
