Dan Marino’s Health Journey: A Call to Awareness
NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino had a significant realization in 2007 during a routine medical check-up. He’s now using his experience to raise awareness for those who might face similar health challenges.
Marino discovered he had metabolic dysfunction-related steatosis hepatitis, commonly referred to as fatty liver disease. Through a partnership with Novo Nordisk and its campaign to share personal stories, he’s joining other former athletes to shed light on this condition.
“I wanted to team up with Novo Nordisk because they’re making strides in addressing this issue,” he shared. “One in twenty Americans suffers from fatty liver disease—about 15 million people. This campaign aims to encourage people to consult their doctors and emphasize that managing it is quite possible.”
The Unordinary Stories initiative allows athletes like Marino to discuss their personal experiences and transitions that often go unnoticed. Even though he didn’t share specifics about other athletes’ stories, the project illustrates the importance of support through life’s changes.
Receiving the diagnosis was undoubtedly a surprise for Marino, but he reacted positively after learning from his doctor. “Early detection really does make it easier to handle things,” he advised. “It’s crucial to get those regular health check-ups. And, of course, diet and exercise are always vital.”
Reflecting on his sports career, Marino feels that the lessons he’s learned can apply to facing health issues. “Sports taught me to remain positive, to keep looking forward and to find solutions. I understand this is the challenge I’m facing,” he said.
As he celebrates his 64th birthday, Marino continues to prioritize a healthy lifestyle. Supported by his wife Claire, he is dedicated to managing his condition and rebuilding his habits.
