U.S. Secretary of State Discusses Defense Cooperation with Qatar
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated early Tuesday that the United States and Qatar are working to finalize a defense cooperation agreement, emphasizing Qatar’s unique position to mediate between Israel and Hamas. This was highlighted during Rubio’s departure from Jerusalem, where he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week while Israeli airstrikes targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar amid heavy bombardment in Gaza City.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Rubio acknowledged Qatar’s frustration over the airstrikes and expressed his commitment to the U.S.-Qatar alliance. He noted that Doha has the potential to play a significant role in neutralizing Hamas as a threat.
Rubio commented on the importance of Qatar, saying, “We believe Qatar can play a very important role in that…” This close partnership is aimed at fostering stability in the region.
He also mentioned that while any country could attempt to mediate between Israel and Hamas, Qatar stands out for its capabilities, stating, “Qatar is what it is.” Nonetheless, he expressed uncertainties about the immediate future, mentioning that it remains to be seen whether they can effectively resolve current tensions.
Rubio conveyed a sense of urgency, warning that opportunities for diplomacy with Hamas are diminishing. “We’re not in months anymore… we’ll probably have weeks, maybe a few weeks,” he explained. This marks a critical moment, as efforts focus on reaching a negotiated agreement aimed at demilitarization and addressing hostage situations.
