Barrett Comments on Political Climate After Kirk’s Death
Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett expressed concern over the current political climate in light of the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA.
“I think it reflects a troubling aspect of our culture—it’s something that’s really spiraling out of control,” Barrett remarked during an appearance on Monday, as reported on the Hew Hewitt Show.
Following Kirk’s death, public discourse has become increasingly polarized, with both sides of the political spectrum blaming each other for the surge in violence across the nation.
Over the past year, several alarming incidents have rocked the political landscape. For instance, in April, an individual attempted to set fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were inside. Additionally, in June, former Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were tragically shot in their home, following two assassination attempts on President Trump in 2024.
Barrett recounted learning about Kirk’s shooting while on the Notre Dame campus. “It was heartbreaking, especially for the families involved,” she said.
Currently, Barrett is promoting her new book, “Listen to the Law,” urging citizens to foster constructive dialogue without resorting to personal attacks. She noted that Kirk often engaged with those who held opposing views.
“I genuinely hope that Kirk’s assassination serves as a wake-up call for our society about the troubling path we’re on. There’s a clear danger that we can’t ignore,” Barrett stated.
“We must avoid isolating ourselves from differing opinions. Contrary to that, Charlie Kirk exemplified engagement with contrasting viewpoints. The essential message here is not to target individuals but to thoughtfully challenge ideas.”
