Missouri Senator Criticizes Left for Political Violence
During a hearing on Tuesday, Missouri Republican Senator Eric Schmidt blamed the left for fostering an environment where political violence is present, especially in light of the assassination of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk the previous Wednesday.
A Friday YouGov poll suggested that about 25% of individuals identifying as very liberal would sometimes justify political violence. Schmidt referenced this survey while speaking to the Senate Judiciary Committee, pushing back against the idea that the left has no significant issues with political violence compared to conservatives.
“Political violence is always wrong. Period,” Schmidt stated. He emphasized that such violence cannot be excused on either side of the political spectrum. “Today, political violence is not an equally shared issue,” he added, urging honesty in recognizing its ideological roots.
He mentioned the discourse surrounding Charlie Kirk’s assassination, insisting that the reasons behind the murder are clear and should not be dismissed as random or irrational. “We know. The facts are clear,” he said.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox remarked on Friday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused in the assassination, had become increasingly political, perceiving Kirk as a figure of hatred. It was reported that Robinson was “deeply indoctrinated” by leftist ideology.
In a troubling find, police discovered ammunition engraved with phrases such as “Hey, fascist! Catch!” and references to “Bella Ciao,” an Italian anti-fascist anthem popular on TikTok.
Schmidt concluded that while most Americans oppose political violence, a notable minority that encourages it appears to be predominantly on the left. He reiterated insights from the YouGov poll, which claimed only about 3% of those identifying as very conservative justify violence for political aims, a statistic he still found troubling.
