Mets Fight for Wildcard Spot; Giants Call Up Top Prospect
The Mets currently hold the last National League wildcard position, but they’re feeling the heat. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants are looking to bolster their lineup.
On Monday, the Giants promoted their top prospect, Bryce Eldridge, who is ranked No. 13 among baseball prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
This 20-year-old outfielder has had a decent season in Triple-A Sacramento, posting a .249 batting average, along with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs over 66 games.
Eldridge’s promotion came after another player, Dominic Smith, was sidelined with hamstring issues following an Illinois trip over the weekend.
In his debut Monday night, however, Eldridge struggled, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in an 8-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks’ victory brought them within half a game of the Mets, with the Giants and Reds trailing by two games for the final playoff spot in the NL.
The Giants are making a late-season push for the postseason, despite the odds looking unfavorable just a few weeks ago.
Following the surprising absence of All-Star slugger Rafael Devers in June, the Giants had fallen off the playoff radar by August 22, finding themselves more than seven games back and barely at .500.
However, a recent surge, with a 14-7 record in August and September, has rekindled hope for their playoff aspirations.
The Mets, who were once struggling in mid-June, contributed to some of that Giants success. Notably, they dealt right-handed reliever Tyler Rodgers to the Giants for pitcher Jose Bateau just ahead of the trade deadline.
Rodgers has been a reliable addition to the Mets’ bullpen, boasting a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings since the trade.
On the other hand, Gilbert seemed to have found his rhythm as well, hitting .302 with a .945 OPS over his last 15 games, just in time for what could be a crucial postseason run for San Francisco.
The pressure remains on the Mets (77-73), who find themselves in an eight-game winning streak, while their competitors, the Philadelphia Phillies, clinched the NL East on Monday night.
Yet the Giants have been struggling, losing three straight and four out of their last five games.
