FBI Director Kash Patel pushed back against California Senator Adam Schiff on Tuesday after Schiff inquired about Ghislaine Maxwell’s shift to a low-security prison. Maxwell moved from a federal facility in Tallahassee, Florida, to a minimum-security camp in Texas following discussions with Associate Attorney General Todd Blanche on July 24 and 25. During a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, Patel stated that the decision for the transfer rested with the Prison Bureau, which sparked a heated exchange.
“The Prison Bureau acted on its own without consulting Blanche or anyone else, but after this meeting, I was transferred to a place that had nothing to do with it and isn’t suitable for sex offenders,” Schiff questioned. “Do you expect Americans to believe that? Do you think they’re clueless?”
Patel responded, “No. I think Americans understand the truth. I’m not particularly focused on the daily movements of prisoners. My job is to protect this country, pursue historical reforms, and combat the misuse of intelligence—like what you do,” he remarked. “We’ve demonstrated repeatedly that you’ve lied about Russiagate and January 6th. You are a disgrace to the Senate and a coward.”
A seasoned intelligence officer who previously aligned with House Intelligence Committee Democrats relayed concerns to the FBI in 2017 regarding Donald Trump, according to released memos.
Schiff suggested the prison transfer felt dubious and started to express his lack of surprise, but Patel cut him off. “It’s not surprising you continue to mislead from your position, run shows, and fundraise off this farce,” Patel shot back. “The FBI protects this country and California’s citizens. Yet you’re focused on a child sex predator charged by past administrations.”
“What did President Trump do? He had the guts to introduce new charges. And what did we do? You call me the most transparent FBI director in history? I challenge you to speak the truth and be honest. Go ahead and find the cameras you want to talk to now,” he added.
The House Oversight Committee has released over 33,000 pages of documents regarding Jeffrey Epstein, who died on September 2nd, after acquiring them from the Department of Justice.
The Prison Bureau acknowledged Maxwell’s relocation but didn’t provide details on the reasons behind it, as reported by NBC News on August 1st. Trump denied having any knowledge of the transfer when asked by reporters if he had personally approved it, according to Newsweek on August 5th.
