FBI Predicts Violent Crime Decline from 2024 to 2025

The FBI has forecasted a decline in violent crime across the U.S. for 2024 to 2025, anticipating a drop in homicides by over 18%. This is significant, as other major crime categories are also expected to decline for the first time in almost a century.

These projections come from an initial report titled “First Look: 2025 Crime Data,” which aims to provide a quicker overview of annual crime trends prior to the comprehensive “Domestic Crime” report set to be released later this year.

Alongside the decrease in homicides, the report indicates that robberies could drop by approximately 18.5%, while rape and aggravated assault may see reductions of about 7% each.

FBI Director Kash Patel commented that the report reveals the largest decreases in violent crime and homicides since 1937. He emphasized the significant drops in aggravated assault, rape, and robbery as well.

Patel noted, “Over the past 14 months, we have made substantial adjustments to the FBI, and these outcomes suggest those changes are yielding positive results. This FBI will continue making strides for the American public under President Trump’s leadership, supporting law enforcement every step of the way.”

Property crimes—including robbery, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson—are projected to have decreased by about 12.4%. This year’s data includes contributions from roughly 17,075 law enforcement agencies, representing nearly 96% of the U.S. population.

The report also projects that 53 law enforcement officers will die in the line of duty in 2025, down from 64 in 2024. In terms of violent crimes, over 90,000 individuals were assaulted, with an unfortunate 28 fatalities due to accidental causes.

In total, nearly 414,000 people were arrested for violent crimes, with an additional 868,000 apprehended for property offenses. The FBI highlighted that on average, a murder takes place every 37.3 minutes in the United States, while a violent crime occurs every 28.2 seconds.

However, it’s important to note that recent reports from large U.S. cities indicate ongoing violent crime challenges, underscoring that despite these projections, issues remain in certain areas.

Data from 67 U.S. police agencies collected between January 1 and March 31 demonstrated a 17.7% decline in homicides and a 20.4% drop in robberies. This information includes data from major cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Philadelphia.
