Democrats Choose Socialism over Capitalism, Favoring Far-Left Candidates

Socialism is gaining traction within the Democratic Party, as indicated by a recent study funded by socialist groups.

The American Democrat Socialists (DSA) Fund commissioned research from Data for Progress. The findings reveal that most Democrats lean towards both capitalism and socialism, rather than far-left figures like Zoran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Politics has reported on these findings.

“The heart of the party seeks both democratic socialism as a guiding principle and democratic socialist representatives,” asserted Gabetobias, the executive director of the DSA Fund, which focuses on political education.

Perhaps we should reconsider electing someone with communist ties?

The survey indicates that more than half of Democratic voters (53%) express a preference for socialists, which includes figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Interestingly, 14% of respondents did not choose either option.

The report suggests that Democrats who identify as democratic socialists align closely with those who simply call themselves Democrats. They tend to favor the concept of democratic socialism over capitalism when definitions are presented to them.

This study describes democratic socialists as advocates for a more active government role in bettering American lives. They generally support higher taxes on businesses and affluent individuals, alongside regulations that protect consumers and workers, and favor greater public ownership of essential sectors like housing, healthcare, and utilities.

Meanwhile, capitalists are defined as those who believe the private sector is most effective in enhancing American lives. They typically support lower taxes, oppose business regulations, and prefer private ownership in key areas like housing and healthcare.

Upon reviewing the explanations, 74% of Democratic voters felt that democratic socialism resonated more closely with their beliefs, compared to just 16% who favored capitalism.

As expected, the study found that socialism is often viewed negatively by Republicans and many independents. This contrast may help explain why far-left Democrats have more success in urban centers like New York City, while facing challenges in more conservative areas. The survey also highlighted that a significant number of independent voters and Republicans prefer capitalism.

This survey marks the first official opinion poll released by the DSA Fund, conducted with 1,257 voters between August 22 and 24, with a margin of error of ±3 points.
