In a recent interview, actor Shea LaBeouf opened up about mending his relationship with John Voight, his co-star in “Megalopolis,” despite their differing political views.
LaBeouf, now 39, featured in the documentary “Megadock,” which chronicles the challenging production of director Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 film “Megalopolis,” known for its commercial failure. He discussed how he and Voight restarted their communication after taking a break from political discussions years back.
“I was in the midst of taking the ninth step in this program. Voight’s politics and my politics are so different, I had to compensate Voight,” he shared.
The two actors had previously worked together in the 2003 film “Holes” and the 2007 blockbuster “Transformers.” LaBeouf recalled how Voight took him under his wing, teaching him about the craft before the divisive political climate surrounding Donald Trump’s 2016 election.
LaBeouf mentioned that during Trump’s presidency, he found himself distancing from Voight, even having a heated phone argument that led to a long silence between them.
Voight, a staunch conservative and a supporter of Trump, remains somewhat isolated in the entertainment industry, primarily leaning towards more conservative circles. Earlier this year, he was named a “Special Ambassador to Hollywood” by Trump in hopes of revitalizing the film sector.
In contrast, LaBeouf has been known for his opposition to Trump, notably through an art piece titled “He Will Not Divide Us,” which served as a protest during Trump’s inauguration in 2017. It was intended to rally voices against the new administration but faced significant challenges, including being dismantled due to safety issues.
Reflecting on their relationship, LaBeouf expressed gratitude towards Voight, emphasizing the mentorship he received. “He was like my mentor at a young age,” he noted. “He seems like the first real actor I’ve ever met.” Although there are many differences between them, it appears that LaBeouf values the connection they once had.
Voight’s representatives have not provided any comments on the matter.
