Brian Roberts Issues Apology to Canadian Baseball Fans
Brian Roberts, a broadcaster for the Orioles, has expressed regret for a remark he made that offended Canadian baseball fans during a weekend series with the Blue Jays in Baltimore.
The former MLB All-Star questioned the “baseball IQs” of Canadian fans during a television broadcast on Saturday. By Sunday, however, he was reflecting on his comments and seemed to acknowledge the impact of what he had said.
“I want to apologize to Toronto fans regarding my comments. I certainly didn’t intend to disrespect anyone,” Roberts stated. “I’ve always appreciated playing in Toronto, and I hope they can accept my heartfelt apology.”
His comments sparked some controversy after fans at Rogers Center booed during an attempted pick-off by Baltimore’s pitcher Shawn Duvin while the Orioles were trailing 3-1 in the eighth inning.
“I have to be careful about how I put things, but it’s true that I’ve heard questions about Canadian baseball IQ,” Roberts explained. “It sometimes seems like there’s more knowledge of hockey than baseball here.”
While he issued an apology, it appears he didn’t fully retract his previous statements. He seemed to carry on a narrative that, while possibly generalizing, reflected his perspective on the differences between sports cultures.
“To be honest, it wasn’t intended as an insult,” he remarked. “I’ve encountered this conversation throughout my life. I might lack hockey IQ, and while it’s a generalization, many Canadians come to America. The truth of it? I’m not so sure.”
