Reaction to Charlie Kirk’s Death
Sam Ponder, a former ESPN personality, shared that she received an overwhelming amount of direct messages after commenting on the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk. Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot during an event at Utah Valley University earlier this week. Ponder expressed her grief not only for Kirk’s family but also for the state of the nation in her post on X.
In her follow-up comments on Saturday, Ponder noted that her direct messages felt more invasive than usual. “Trust me, that says something,” she remarked. She further emphasized the irony in how opinions seem to be scrutinized in light of such tragedy, suggesting that not aligning perfectly with a specific viewpoint could lead to silence instead of open discussions. Ponder also pointed out that expecting people to adhere to certain beliefs just to show sympathy feels hypocritical.
Ponder, who left ESPN after more than a decade of service in 2024, wasn’t the only notable figure reacting to Kirk’s death. Jackson Dart, the quarterback for the Giants, also condemned the violence, and the Yankees observed a moment of silence shortly after the incident.
In remembrance, NFL teams around the country have honored Kirk, continuing tributes initiated by the Packers earlier in the week. Meanwhile, there have been consequences for those in the Carolina Panthers organization who made insensitive remarks following Kirk’s death, with staff members losing their jobs over the controversy.
