‘Breeding Grounds for Hate’: UN Agency ‘Intentionally’ Placed Hamas Terrorists in Schools, Report Claims

UN Efforts in Gaza Under Scrutiny

A report released by a watchdog organization on Wednesday highlights significant shortcomings in how the UN is managing aid in the Gaza Strip. It claims that the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has appointed numerous Hamas members to key leadership roles, particularly in educational institutions.

The UNRWA, which often claims neutrality, appears to have knowingly employed individuals associated with Hamas in Gaza and Lebanon. The report argues that UNRWA did not adequately dismiss several leaders linked to Hamas, contradicting its stated mission of neutrality.

“By employing Hamas leaders in positions of authority, such as school principals and teachers, and allowing them to oversee teachers’ unions, UNRWA has facilitated extremism,” the report states. It also notes that, over its 75-year history, UNRWA has expelled thousands of individuals with jihadist ties.

Specifically, the report reveals that Suhail al-Hindi, known for his Hamas affiliations, continued in his role as principal without repercussions, despite public awareness of his ties. Similarly, Fateh Sharif, a leading figure in the Lebanese Teachers Union and a senior Hamas member, retained his position.

UNRWA claims to have terminated al-Hindi’s employment in 2017, yet al-Hindi asserts he still received benefits from the agency. According to sources, he was offered a choice between resigning with benefits or being fired, but his eventual resignation seems complicated by conflicting accounts about whether he was indeed let go.

Al-Hindi has also made statements regarding “upcoming battles” prior to the October 7 attacks, emphasizing a readiness for conflict.

After his death in an Israeli airstrike in 2024, Sharif was celebrated by Hamas as a significant leader within the movement, overseeing a considerable number of staff and students.

The United Nations has not responded to inquiries regarding these allegations.
