Three individuals, including two firefighters from Arizona, lost their lives when an ambulance was struck head-on by another vehicle, described as a “terrifying” incident by their supervisor.
Brenna Klikowski, 31, and Damon Thompson, 21, were pronounced dead at the scene on State Route 260 near Show Low around 10 PM. The Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District confirmed the tragic news.
The driver of the other vehicle also died instantly.
Chi Frandy Chevalier from Timber Mesa remarked on the severe impact, noting the extreme damage caused by the collision. He mentioned, “I’ve seen many accidents in my career, but this was horrifying.”
Reportedly, the two firefighters had just dropped off patients at a medical facility and were returning when the westbound vehicle crossed the center line, colliding with them.
Klikowski had been part of the department for three years, while Thompson was just 15 days shy of completing his first year.
Chevalier praised both individuals as valuable members of the team.
He said, “(Brenna) was certainly first class, a caring person and an excellent paramedic.” Additionally, Thompson’s parents shared that he always aspired to be a firefighter.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with state officials expressing condolences to the families of the deceased. Governor Katie Hobbs stated, “We are heartbroken by the loss of two brave firefighters in this tragic accident. These heroes dedicated their lives to protecting our community, and my thoughts are with their families, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
