Tragic Incident in Texas: Restaurant Owner Takes Lives of Family
A well-known restaurant owner in Texas allegedly shot and killed his business partner’s wife and their two young children before attempting to take his own life at home, as reported by authorities and various media outlets.
Matthew Mitchell, 52, along with Ty Mitchell, 39, and their 8-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, were discovered dead in their River Oaks residence on a Monday evening, according to the Houston Police Department.
Authorities made this grim discovery during a welfare check at around 5:30 p.m., prompted by concerns from the family’s babysitter and a relative, who hadn’t heard from them since the previous night.
“Evidence found at the scene suggests this was a murder-suicide involving a man who shot three individuals before turning the gun on himself,” the police stated.
Matthew and Ty Mitchell were recognized in the Houston area for owning Traveler’s Table, a restaurant featuring “globally curated cuisine” inspired by their travels. They had also launched another establishment named Traveler’s Cart, which specializes in street food.
Traveler’s Table has gained attention on Food Network shows like “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” hosted by Guy Fieri. Additionally, one of their chefs made an appearance on “Beat Bobby Flay,” securing a win over celebrity cooks.
Matthew’s biography notes that he earned a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and spent time as a writer and journalist in cities like London, Paris, and New York. After moving back to Texas, he attended Rice University and worked in the pharmaceutical sector before transitioning to the restaurant industry more than a decade later.
Ty Mitchell, on the other hand, grew up in the restaurant business, working at her family’s Vietnamese restaurant. According to her biography, she later held HR leadership roles at several Fortune 500 hospitality and retail companies.
While police have yet to officially confirm the identities of the victims, Ty’s sister, Lai Mai, utilized Facebook to verify that Ty and her two children were killed. In her emotional post, she expressed heartbreak over the loss and requested privacy for the family during this incredibly difficult period.
“Her love of travel and food brought her and her husband, Matthew, together,” says the Traveler’s Table website.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone who has further information to reach out to the HPD Homicide Unit.
