FCC Chair Threatens ABC and Disney Over Kimmel’s Comments
On Thursday, FCC Chair Brendan Kerr issued a warning to ABC and Disney concerning remarks made by Jimmy Kimmel related to Charlie Kirk’s assassination allegations. Kimmel, in his recent comments, accused conservatives of reaching “a new low” by attempting to associate leftist ideologies with 22-year-old suspect Tyler Robinson.
Kimmel remarked, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the Magga gang, who desperately tried to characterize the child who murdered Charlie Kirk as something other than them, trying to score political points.” This statement sparked controversy, as Kimmel suggested that Robinson was somehow tied to the “Maga Gang,” despite evidence pointing towards left-wing influences.
During an appearance on “The Benny Show,” Kerr described Kimmel’s remarks as “some of the most sickest acts,” hinting at possible actions the FCC might consider. He emphasized that there seems to be a coordinated effort to mislead Americans regarding their nature, with Kimmel at the center of this narrative. He stated, “From the moment I became chairman, I aim to reinvigorate the public interest.” Kerr underscored that broadcasters have different obligations compared to other communication platforms.
He further explained that companies like ABC need to adjust their behavior and hinted that Kimmel’s situation could lead to consequences. Kerr noted that public interest shouldn’t translate to a partisan spectacle that fails to meet broadcasting obligations.
Although Kerr acknowledged Kimmel’s apology as a minimal step, he suggested that “suspension” could be a necessary response, especially if other licensed broadcasters do not “push back” against perceived bias. He criticized Kimmel’s actions as a distortion of news and implied a potential for a serious legal challenge, stating that Kimmel has made a conscious effort to mislead viewers.
This creates a serious dilemma for Disney, Kerr noted. Meanwhile, ABC and Disney had yet to respond to inquiries regarding the matter.
Kimmel’s comments came shortly after FBI officials and Utah’s governor hinted at Robinson’s alignment with increasingly radical leftist ideologies. Additionally, details emerged about Robinson’s identity and his relationship with a transgender partner undergoing a transition.
In a subsequent segment, Kimmel also took aim at Vice President JD Vance, who was guest hosting “Charlie Kirk Show.” Vance criticized figures on the far left, to which Kimmel retorted dismissively, suggesting Vance’s arguments were unfounded.
