After Trump’s influence on the CDC, West Coast states come together to provide vaccine advice — California diverges with new legislation.

Vaccination is both safe and effective, offering the best defense against respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. Seasonal vaccines play a vital role in public health by helping to lower serious illnesses, reduce community spread, and ease pressures on hospitals.

“We want everyone living and working in our states to recognize that a united public health and scientific community is here to back you up with data and evidence, helping you make healthy choices. Our priority is to protect our communities,” remarked Dr. Erica Pan, Director of the California Department of Public Health.

“Vaccines are essential in preventing severe illnesses and fatalities. In light of a lack of federal direction, our four states are taking the lead to offer reliable and consistent guidance that our communities can trust. Our aim is to ensure these recommendations are backed by science and that the vaccines desired by the public are readily available. Public health relies on clarity, fairness, and transparency, and that’s exactly what we’re aiming to provide today,” stated Dr. Sejal Hathi, MD, MBA, Director of the Oregon Health Authority.

“Vaccines provide protection not only for individuals but also for our families, neighbors, and communities. By keeping up to date, people in Washington can help reduce illness spread and maintain strength in our state this season. The recommendations from the Alliance are scientifically grounded, giving our communities trust in the guidance we offer,” noted Washington State Secretary of Health, Dennis Worsham.

“The effectiveness of public health agencies hinges on public trust. We recognize that it’s our duty to earn that trust by assisting individuals in safeguarding themselves, their families, and the broader community. These recommendations reflect a collaborative effort, conducted with humility and grounded in scientific principles, to fulfill our obligations to the public.” – Kenneth S. Fink, MD, MGA, MPH, Director of the Hawaiʻi Department of Health.

Truth under assault

Recently, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has taken a contentious approach towards the CDC, dismissing its vaccine advisory committee, firing all 17 members, and appointing individuals with selective viewpoints, including vaccine skeptics. He has also forced the CDC director out, leading to resignations among high-level and career staff, and convened expedited meetings for this restructured panel to vote on crucial recommendations that influence national vaccine policies and insurance coverage. Public health leaders are concerned that these actions undermine independent oversight based on science, introducing political motives into decisions critical for the health of Americans — when trust and clarity are needed most.

States stepping in

Alliance states are pushing back against what they view as an attack on science initiated by the Trump administration. They are unified in their commitment to ensure health recommendations prioritize safety, effectiveness, transparency, accessibility, and trust. Health Officers, all trained medical doctors, along with subject matter experts from WCHA states, have reviewed guidelines from respected national medical organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. The alliance supports the idea that all clinically recommended vaccinations should be accessible to the residents of our states.

The WCHA is dedicated to enhancing its structure, analyzing new evidence and recommendations as they arise, and ensuring that the review process remains open. They’ll continue to keep the community informed about any updated assessments.
