Unconventional Path for Olympic Athletes
In a surprising twist, some American Olympic medalists are embarking on a different athletic journey. Fred Carly, who clinched gold in the 100m at the 2022 World Championships, is set to participate in next year’s Enhanced Games. This event, reminiscent of the Olympics, intriguingly permits performance-enhancing drugs.
By committing to this competition, Carly becomes both the first American male athlete and the first in track and field to join this new venture.
Carly recently secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where his teammate Noah Lyles excelled, bagging gold and silver medals. Lyles also made headlines for winning both the 4x400m relay in 2019 and the 4x100m relay in 2023 at the World Championships.
However, not everything has been smooth sailing. It seems sprinters have found themselves in legal scrapes recently. For instance, an incident involving Carly, his wife, and a social media connection raised eyebrows. According to an arrest affidavit, Carly confronted his wife aggressively on May 6, 2024, leading to a physical altercation that resulted in her striking him in self-defense, followed by a more serious escalation.
Adding to the drama, police had to intervene in another confrontation in May when Carly allegedly attacked Olympic hurdler Aleisha Johnson. Reports indicated that he caused her facial injuries, and injuries were said to align with her statements.
As for competition, Carly was supposed to participate in the Grand Slam Track event but later learned he wouldn’t be competing due to being charged with a first-degree misdemeanor.
Interestingly, Carly’s participation in the Paris 4x100m team was overshadowed by a failed handoff, and there were rumors regarding illness affecting teammate Lyles.
Meanwhile, Dr. Aron Douza, who founded the Enhanced Games, has openly criticized the traditional Olympics and the governing bodies of sports. He suggested that their concern for athlete health appears hypocritical, especially given that major sponsors like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s have long histories of contributing to public health issues. Douza argues that such corporations can’t preach safety while being associated with events like the Olympics.
The Enhanced Games are set to take place in Las Vegas next May, and it’s notable that former Australian Olympic swimmer James Magnussen is also expected to compete. With rewards reaching as high as $1 million, the stakes are undeniably elevated.
