49ers provide encouraging news about Brock Purdy's injury for possible Week 3 return

Brock Purdy’s Practice Status Before Cardinals Game

Kyle Shanahan mentioned that Brock Purdy has “a chance” to play this Sunday when the 49ers take on the Cardinals for their home opener. It’s a bit of a nail-biter, honestly.

Purdy was back in practice with limited participation on Wednesday, according to what the head coach shared with reporters. He’s been dealing with toe injuries, which sidelined him last week and caused him to miss a close win against the Saints, 26-21. If he’s unable to play again, that means Mac Jones will step in for a second consecutive start.

Interestingly, Shanahan has kept options open in case of any last-minute changes for the team.

Purdy had previously played with injuries to his right leg and left shoulder during Week One against the Seahawks. It’s a tough spot for him.

Jones really stepped up in his performance last weekend, earning admiration from teammates, including star running back Christian McCaffrey.

He completed 26 of 39 passes, racking up 279 yards and throwing three touchdowns in that road game in New Orleans. McCaffrey praised him, saying, “He was calm, made huge throws, played confidently.” It sounds like he was really in the zone—definitely a great game for him.

There was also some chatter about Jones feeling enthusiastic about Purdy potentially returning. Linebacker Fred Werner, during a recent appearance, expressed his appreciation for Purdy, saying, “Purdy is a guy. I love him wholeheartedly. He’s proven himself in this league since being drafted.”

As for the upcoming game on Sunday, both the 49ers and Cardinals head into the match with undefeated records at 2-0. Let’s see how it plays out.
