Trent Grisham really stepped up, clearing the bases with a double and contributing to a six-run sixth inning, which put the Yankees in a strong position to win.
Brendan Beck made his major league debut just hours after being called up, and he performed admirably, pitching three innings and allowing only two runs.
In the game where Ryan Weathers got hurt, the Yankees used six pitchers over nine innings, achieving their 16th win in 19 games.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, filled with promising moments for the team, but then came a serious incident involving Yason Dominguez. The concern for one of the franchise’s most beloved players cast a shadow over the victory.
The Yankees triumphed over the Rangers 9-2 in front of a packed crowd of 42,729 fans in the Bronx, but the mood shifted dramatically after Dominguez was injured on the very first batter of the game, which resulted in him being taken to the hospital.
Dominguez collided with the left-field wall after jumping to make a catch on Paul Blackburn’s eighth pitch to Brandon Nimmo. He managed to secure the ball in his glove but fell hard, losing his hat and sunglasses in the process.
After what was arguably one of his most courageous efforts, Dominguez lay on the ground for several minutes. Though he was able to get up, he struggled to walk a few steps before needing a cart. His emotional exit spoke volumes.
Manager Aaron Boone later reported that Dominguez suffered a mild AC joint sprain but thankfully avoided a concussion. He will be out for a few weeks.
This season has certainly tested Dominguez’s resilience. He didn’t complain when he didn’t make the major league roster out of spring training, which was hardly surprising given the returns of Grisham and Cody Bellinger. Instead, he took out his frustration by dominating in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
His solid performance led to his promotion to fill in for the injured Giancarlo Stanton in late April. However, he faced yet another setback in his third game when he was hit on the elbow, increasing concerns for both him and the team, especially considering the emotional reactions from teammates during the latest incident.
Bellinger, Grisham, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Amed Rosario rushed to Dominguez’s side while staff assessed his condition. The atmosphere was tense, with players and coaches from both dugouts anxiously watching their promising teammate.
If Dominguez is out for an extended period, the Yankees have some options. Spencer Jones, currently on the active roster, might be considered, and with Rosario and Max Schumann able to play outfield, recently optioned Anthony Volpe might also step up.
The Yankees (26-12), who had the distinction of being the last team to utilize the injured list this season, are now facing multiple injuries that are testing their depth.
Stanton is sidelined for two weeks due to a calf strain and has not yet begun running. Ben Rice is still on the roster but is missing games because of a bruised hand. Additionally, with Jose Caballero’s elbow swelling, Schumann had to step in for his first start at shortstop, although Caballero did return later in the game.
