The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently approved new listing rules. These rules will primarily affect how products traded on exchanges can be listed, particularly for cryptocurrency-linked exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Now, when entities want to list spot products containing crypto, the SEC won’t need to review each application individually.
This enhances the process significantly. Previously, getting approval for such listings could take as long as 240 days. Now, it seems a bit faster and less complicated.
ETF publishers looking to introduce new product ideas must meet general listing standards, which should facilitate a smoother path to launch.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins mentioned the decision is part of an effort to lower barriers for accessing digital asset products within the regulated market in the US. He emphasized that these new standards would keep US capital markets at the forefront of digital innovation.
Along with these changes, the SEC has also authorized options linked to the CBOE Bitcoin US ETF index and its mini version, which is a notable expansion of crypto-related derivatives on the market.
Impacts on Altcoin ETFs
This adjustment in listing standards might open the gates for a new wave of spot-based Altcoin ETFs that have been waiting for regulatory approval. James Sefert, an ETF research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, expressed optimism about this. He said we should prepare for a significant number of Spot Crypto ETP launches soon.
Furthermore, Christine Smith, president of the Solana Policy Institute, shared her enthusiasm about the ruling. She pointed out that these new guidelines contribute to ensuring legal clarity for US businesses, ultimately helping investors access digital assets safely.
In her words, “These updated listing standards really benefit US investors and encourage innovation in digital assets.” There’s a sense of excitement about what this could mean for the future.
As a side note, it seems the approval process has been clarified, adjusting the timeframe mentioned earlier from 270 to 240 days.
