Accused Charlie Kirk Assailant Apparently Asked Police For a ‘Gentle’ Surrender

Suspect in Murder Case Requests Peaceful Surrender

On Wednesday, authorities reported that Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, urged police to facilitate a “peaceful” surrender of a suspect.

Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby stated during a press conference that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson expressed fear of being shot by police and requested a “peaceful and gentle” surrender. The sheriff agreed to this approach, allowing Robinson to voluntarily turn himself in.

Brooksby explained, “Robinson was either terrified that the SWAT team would come after him at home or worried about being shot. This concern was part of the negotiations that led him to surrender. We aimed for a soft approach to make him feel comfortable showing up at my office, and that’s how it unfolded.”

A retired law enforcement officer and Brooksby’s friend informed him on Friday evening that Robinson had admitted to committing murder, as he was acquainted with Robinson and his family through a religious community.

Following this revelation, Brooksby contacted Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith to arrange Robinson’s handover. Within hours, the suspect’s parents and a friend brought him to Brooksby’s office for a meeting with detectives.

As Brooksby’s office was not the lead agency, Robinson had to wait about two and a half hours for federal agents to arrive. During this time, there was no doubt in Brooksby’s mind about Robinson’s involvement.

Additionally, Robinson’s father recognized him in a photo released by the FBI in Salt Lake City and confronted his son. The suspect reportedly confessed to the murder and expressed suicidal thoughts rather than surrendering. His father managed to persuade him to speak with a young pastor who had previously worked with Brooksby’s task force.

Robinson’s parents mentioned that he had become increasingly political over the years, describing him as “more gay and right-oriented.” He was living with his transgender boyfriend, Lance Twiggs.

Robinson is facing charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of firearms resulting in serious injury, obstruction of justice, and tampering with witnesses, as well as committing violent crimes in the presence of a child. Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty in this case.
