University of California Files Lawsuit Against Trump Administration
Students, faculty, and staff within the University of California (UC) system have joined with the Educators Union to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming that federal funding cuts, which have significantly impacted the UC system, are unjustified.
Federal agencies have contended that the UC campuses have not adequately addressed issues related to anti-Semitism and have been accused of racism in their admissions processes. As it stands, the Trump administration has already slashed over $500 million in federal funds from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and recently proposed a settlement agreement worth $1.2 billion. It’s worth noting that the UC system itself is not directly involved in this lawsuit.
“The president’s demands for compliance from the university reflect a worldview that is unconstitutional,” one representative stated. The litigation expresses concern that the administration is attempting to influence higher education institutions across the country in ways that it cannot achieve directly.
The court documents make a striking comparison, likening the actions of the Trump administration to fascism, a term historically linked to authoritarian regimes in Europe during World War II. The documents allege that the federal government is utilizing a “scheme of targeting, bullying, and unconstitutional conduct” towards educational institutions nationwide.
Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors, emphasized the importance of academic freedom. He stated, “We will not stand by while the Trump administration undermines one of the nation’s major public higher education systems and belittles the concept of academic freedom at the University of California. This lawsuit is historic, as faculty, students, and staff unite to challenge this authoritarian approach. We aim to safeguard not just free expression, but also the welfare and economic vitality of our communities.”
The White House provided a response to the Daily Caller News Foundation, asserting that federal funds should serve the public rather than contribute to excess overhead costs. White House spokesperson Liz Houston mentioned that a previous case brought by a professor was dismissed in court, suggesting that the lawsuit lacks merit. She emphasized the need for responsible management of federal funds, stating that the Trump administration remains committed to this goal.
As of now, neither the University of California nor the American Association of University Professors has responded to the inquiries made by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
In a related event, UCLA gained notoriety on October 7, 2023, when it was labeled as a “Jewish Exclusion Zone” during widespread anti-Israel protests at universities across the country. The university has since settled lawsuits connected to these protests, resulting in a nearly $6.5 million adjustment. Additionally, in March, the Department of Justice began investigating UCLA and other California institutions regarding alleged discriminatory practices in their admissions processes.
