Trump Criticizes Rep. Ilhan Omar and Somalia
On Thursday, President Trump condemned Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) as well as Somalia. This followed a resolution aimed at Minnesota Democrats that sought to strip her of committee responsibilities.
“I think she’s terrible. I think she should be out. Just terrible,” Trump expressed to reporters aboard Air Force One.
He questioned the state of governance in Somalia, asking rhetorically, “Do they have a president? A council? Do they have police? I love these people. They come from places where they have nothing, and somehow they teach us how to run our country.”
Trump then remarked, “If she gets blamed, that’s great. If she’s out, that’s even better.”
His comments about Omar, who was born in Somalia before moving to the U.S. in the 1990s, followed a House vote regarding resolutions introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.). Mace had accused Omar of implying that conservative figure Charlie Kirk would be responsible for a murder.
On Wednesday, the House narrowly voted 214-213 on the resolution, with four Republican lawmakers siding with Democrats to defeat it.
Omar took to social media to express gratitude toward her colleagues for their support, insisting that the truth was upheld, stating, “Finally, some sanity in the house.”
Trump had previously criticized Omar’s background, making pointed remarks about Somalia.
In a post on Thursday, he described Somalia as troubled by severe government issues, poverty, hunger, terrorism, piracy, and corruption, asserting that it ranks among the most corrupt nations. “Seventy percent of the population lives in extreme poverty,” he noted, highlighting significant food insecurity.
Omar’s office was contacted for a response to these remarks.
Furthermore, Trump accused Omar of marrying her brother for citizenship, a claim that she has consistently denied.
“With all this, Ilhan Omar will show you how to run America!” Trump concluded.
