Emergency Plane Landing in Arizona Averts Disaster
An Arizona family’s close encounter with a plane in distress nearly ended in tragedy during an emergency landing on a highway. Remarkably, the father was able to steer their truck out of harm’s way just in time.
Dramatic video shows a Cessna C150 making a sharp descent onto Highway 80 in Superior, Arizona, shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Crystal Ewing was driving back to Mesa with her husband and their two kids after a Mother’s Day hike when they noticed the plane unusually low above them.
“Wow, look, look,” Ewing exclaimed as the children pointed out the orange and white aircraft, as seen in footage from their dashboard camera.
But then they realized the plane was heading straight for them.
“Oh my God, why is he so low?” Ewing gasped as the aircraft continued its descent.
As her husband swerved the truck into the median, they found themselves directly under the wing of the plane, which had landed precariously close to the road.
The aircraft barreled down the empty highway, narrowly avoiding a sign and eventually coming to a halt in the median.
When reflecting on the shocking experience, Ewing admitted it felt surreal. “It may feel like it happened to someone else or it could be a story, but I was there. It really happened,” she said.
By some stroke of luck, no one was hurt, including the pilot. Ewing’s truck only sustained minor damage from the plane’s propeller.
“I’m still in shock thinking about how close it was. It could have ended badly, but I’m so thankful that everyone—us and the pilot—was okay,” Ewing shared.
The plane’s owner revealed he had lent it out for a recreational flight, and it stalled shortly after takeoff from Superior Municipal Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently looking into the situation.
