Investigation Into Stabbing Incident at Dance Party
A general investigation regarding the tragic stabbing incident at a child’s dance party in Southport last year revealed that teachers’ concerns were overlooked due to bureaucratic obstacles. There have also been accusations suggesting that the parents of the alleged attacker, a teenager of Rwandan heritage, failed to acknowledge alarming risks he posed to others.
In July, Alice da Silva Agiar (9), Bebe King (6), and Elsie Stankombe (7) were fatally stabbed during a British Swift-themed dance party by 17-year-old Axel Ludacabana. The attack left eight other children and two adults injured.
The incident ignited a series of protests against mass immigration across the UK, alongside allegations that the government concealed vital information about Ludacabana’s background and his concerning interests, including potential links to Islamist extremism.
This week, an official inquiry was launched into the circumstances surrounding Ludacabana’s past and the failures of authorities to intervene before the attack, with proceedings taking place at Liverpool City Hall, overseen by Liverpool Moss KC.
Despite evidence indicating possession of materials linked to terrorism, authorities reportedly failed to act appropriately or effectively in response to Ludacabana’s prior aggressive behaviors, including assaults on other children and several knife-related incidents over the five years prior to the tragic event.
The inquiry highlighted that Ludacabana had not attended school for several years since December 2019. Teachers attempted to reach out to him but were hindered by red tape and bureaucratic inefficiency. One teacher expressed concerns, stating, “Red tape is scary. I don’t know how to look at this kid.”
Another teacher mentioned, “I think he may seem inactive, but if he were to become radicalized, it could pose a significant risk.”
Prior to the attack, Ludacabana raised alarms with his online activity, posting about former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and resulting in a second referral to government prevention programs aimed at minors. Authorities later found that he had images of terrorist Jihadi John and disturbing materials related to extremist ideologies on his devices.
Nonetheless, police have maintained that the attack was not driven by terrorist motivations, a narrative that continues to be the official line.
There were multiple warning signs before he left school, including comments about jihad and references to the Manchester Arena bombing. During a prior incident in October 2019, he reportedly said, “that’s why the teacher is being murdered” after being detained for attacking another student.
Childline, a counseling service, had informed his school about previous incidents where Ludacabana brought a knife to school multiple times, claiming he wanted to harm someone who bullied him.
From 2019 to 2021, Ludacabana was involved in various prevention programs, despite displaying worrying internet search patterns related to terrorism and school shootings. Yet, MI5 and counter-terrorism units ultimately dismissed him as a threat, citing the absence of any explicit extremist ideology.
During this time, several social services cases were opened concerning Ludacabana, but none resulted in decisive action.
The families of the victims have since claimed that Ludacabana’s family, having moved from Rwanda, were aware of the risks he posed yet chose to disregard them.
Just two months after his expulsion from Range High School in October 2019, he returned with a knife and a hockey stick, intending to “finish” a bully. When his father was called in to discuss the matter, the principal noted that he appeared calm and didn’t grasp the seriousness of his son’s actions.
Witnesses reported that Ludacabana had assaulted his father multiple times. The year before the Southport incident, he had used fake IDs to purchase machetes online and threatened his father with a knife over their whereabouts.
Peculiarly, just days before the stabbing, his father found chemicals and a bow and arrow in Ludacabana’s room, yet the family failed to notify authorities, despite an awareness of his violent tendencies.
