Arrests of New York Democrats over Immigration Facility Protests

Allegations have surfaced that New York Democrats sought the release of detainees from immigration facilities housing convicted drug traffickers and members of gangs like MS-13. This came to light after around 12 Democratic election officials were arrested on Thursday for allegedly trying to obstruct the judiciary at 26 Federal Plaza in New York.

The elected officials were part of a larger group of nearly 80 individuals detained after attempting to access a storage area within the building and staging sit-ins. Deputy Director of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, criticized the actions of these officials, suggesting they were seeking media attention while compromising the safety of both DHS staff and detainees. She specifically mentioned NYC Director Brad Lander.

“Here’s the thing: Lander made an appearance among protestors at 26 Federal Plaza, impeding law enforcement and causing a disruptive scene,” McLaughlin remarked. Lander reportedly declared inside the building that he wouldn’t leave until detainees were released.

The detainees in question include individuals convicted of serious crimes, such as gang members and illegal immigrants connected to drug trafficking, with some allegedly involved in cases as severe as possessing dangerous substances like fentanyl.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not respond to inquiries about the details of the detainees. The protests caused enough chaos to prompt a bomb threat, leading to blockades and additional arrests by federal and city law enforcement, including Lander and a few state lawmakers.

This site, housing both the Immigration Court and the FBI’s New York Field Office, has faced public scrutiny recently. On Wednesday, a judge issued an interim injunction requiring better accommodations for detainees.

This isn’t Lander’s first run-in with the law for actions regarding immigration enforcement. While campaigning for NYC mayor, he was arrested in June for allegedly assaulting a DHS officer in the same building. He did not succeed in his bid for the Democratic nomination.

McLaughlin emphasized the need to cease the attacks on law enforcement, claiming such rhetoric has led to a dramatic increase in violence against ICE officers. Other prominent Democrats have also faced backlash for their roles in disturbances at ICE facilities. Notably, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested after being denied entry into an immigration detention center and ignoring multiple warnings.
