Hamas Influence in UNRWA Education System
A prominent watchdog organization has released a report examining how the Hamas group has gained control over both the Gaza and Lebanese educational systems through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The report, produced by UN Watch, is titled “The Grip of Terror: How UNRWA Allowed Hamas to Control Its Educational System.” According to their findings, Hamas effectively seized control of UNRWA education by influencing the local staff, specifically targeting the teachers’ union. The report highlights the promotion of anti-Semitic views and jihadist ideologies, with Hamas members placed in top educator roles within schools.
There’s a statement from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) that claims they eliminated a Hamas member who had ties to UNRWA. This suggests a troubling overlap between the organization and terrorist activity.
A spokesman for the State Department commented on these issues, stating that the current administration is facing significant challenges due to UNRWA’s entanglements and is looking into dismantling the organization completely and reclaiming any unspent funds. The spokesperson referenced statements made by Donald Trump regarding potential funding cuts, mentioning that UNRWA has been penetrated by individuals affiliated with a designated terrorist group, and highlighted allegations that UNRWA personnel had a role in Hamas’ attacks against Israel in October 2023.
One notable incident demonstrating Hamas’ influence on the UNRWA educational framework was the dismissal of Matthias Schmale, a senior UNRWA official who led operations in Gaza in 2021. His removal followed his pro-Israel comments during media interviews.
Amir al-Mishal, a UNWA Palestinian leader, stated it took less than ten days to oust Schmale, partnering with his predecessor Suhail al-Hindi, who has had public associations with Hamas over the years while working at UNRWA. Despite international pressure, UNRWA has not dismissed al-Hindi. It’s important to note that both the US and Europe have classified Hamas as a terrorist organization.
UNRWA has been criticized for not taking sufficient action against individuals like Fateh Sharif, who has held dual roles as a leader in both UNRWA’s teachers’ union in Lebanon and Hamas.
Hillel Neuer, the executive director of UN Watch, expressed frustration over the purported misuse of funds meant for peace and tolerance, stating that their investigations reveal alarming truths.
This situation isn’t new; UNRWA has faced numerous scandals over the years, including corruption and allegations of supporting Hamas in violent actions against Israelis and Americans. Reports suggest that many UNRWA employees in Israel were directly involved in a massacre that left over 1,200 dead on October 7, 2023.
In a recent communication, UNRWA spokesperson Juliette Touma dismissed the watchdog’s report as part of a long-standing disinformation effort against the agency, claiming that the vast majority of these issues were already known.
She contended that programs like education and health care are crucial, especially for vulnerable populations, and criticized the US government for halting funding that could support those in need.
