I Support Free Speech, But the GOP Is Attempting to Censor

Discussion on Free Speech and Censorship

During a recent episode of CNN’s “Source,” Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia addressed comments made in 2022 by Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz. Conversations have arisen surrounding the late Charlie Kirk, with some Republicans claiming that his death has led to attempts to suppress voices that dissent from certain viewpoints—an action they argue is un-American.

Host Kaitlan Collins brought up the criticisms aimed at Attorney General Pam Bondy, mentioning that her remarks about free speech following Kirk’s assassination drew backlash from conservatives. Many believed that her stance contradicted the principles they hold dear. She then highlighted Governor Waltz’s earlier statements on the topic.

Waltz emphasized the need to reconsider the protection of free speech, particularly concerning misinformation and hate speech. He stated, “We need to push back on this. There’s no necessity to shield hate speech under the guise of free speech, especially when it threatens democracy.” He made clear distinctions between truth and hate speech.

Kaine responded, expressing surprise at hearing Waltz’s quote. He noted his involvement in drafting documents foundational to American democracy, reaffirming the importance of free speech as a fundamental right. Kaine mentioned, “I always thought Charlie Kirk was a champion of free speech, though I didn’t know him personally. His tragic death seems to have prompted a shift among Republicans who now seem intent on censoring differing opinions.”
