FAA Urges Airlines to Reassess Emergency Evacuation Protocols
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is urging airlines to take another look at their emergency evacuation procedures. This recommendation came through a press release on Friday, where the FAA asked airlines to scrutinize their training, presentation, and command procedures during emergencies.
One notable concern mentioned was that “passengers have taken home items in many recent evacuations.” The FAA emphasized the risks involved, noting that carry-on items not only slow down evacuations but could also potentially damage emergency slides.
In terms of recommendations, the FAA highlighted the need for passenger outreach and educational campaigns, suggesting that these initiatives could be integrated with a Safety Management System (SMS) to address risks and dangers effectively.
Several recent incidents have highlighted these concerns. For instance, in July, American Airlines Flight 3023, which was supposed to head to Miami, had to be evacuated at Denver International Airport before takeoff. Thankfully, all 173 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from the Boeing 737 Max 8.
Additionally, there was a separate incident involving Hawaiian Airlines flights that had to divert to a different runway in San Diego due to a potential bomb threat. Almost 300 passengers were evacuated during that scare while law enforcement searched the aircraft heading to Honolulu. In both situations, the focus on how passengers responded to safety protocols became evidently crucial.
It’s also worth mentioning an earlier case when a Delta plane had to evacuate after its engines started burning as it left Orlando International Airport. In that scenario, all 300 passengers were evacuated swiftly, once again underscoring the need for effective and efficient emergency procedures.
While the FAA’s recommendations aim to improve overall safety, the real challenge lies in ensuring that passengers understand the importance of adhering to these protocols during emergencies.
