Trump and Xi Plan Summit Meeting in South Korea

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea next month following what he described as a “very productive” phone call.

The meeting is set to take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, scheduled for October 31st and November 1st. Trump also mentioned plans to visit China in early 2026, and noted that Xi would come to the U.S. at an appropriate time.

During the call, Trump discussed various topics, including trade relations, the situation in Ukraine, and the approval process for the sale of TikTok.

Trump shared details of their conversation on his social media platform, saying, “The call was very good. We’ll talk again on the phone. We appreciate TikTok’s approval. We’re both grateful. I look forward to seeing you at APEC!”

According to reports from Chinese state media, the talks were characterized as “practical, positive and constructive.”

On his side, Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of avoiding “unilateral trade restrictions” against China, a statement reflecting ongoing tensions in trade relations.

It’s worth noting that Trump has targeted China with tariffs, impacting trade significantly, particularly around issues like fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.

Xi also expressed hope that the Trump administration would ensure a “open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment” for Chinese companies operating in the U.S.

As for TikTok, the Chinese government indicated it will respect the company’s interests and is open to productive negotiations that adhere to both Chinese laws and business practices.

This recent call marks the second conversation between Trump and Xi since Trump returned to office.
