Lawmakers Debate Trump’s Gas Tax Suspension Proposal
Amid rising fuel prices, tensions with Iran have ignited a debate among lawmakers regarding President Donald Trump’s suggestion to halt the federal gas tax. Prices at the pump have surpassed $4 per gallon.
Democrats are urging the president to “end the war,” while opinions among Republicans vary on whether the gas tax suspension would genuinely help consumers.
Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, stated, “To truly lower gas prices, we need to stop this war. The president should focus on that instead of looking for other solutions.” Similarly, Senator Maisie Hirono from Hawaii criticized the ongoing conflict, attributing rising prices directly to Trump’s actions, claiming, “He didn’t have a permit, and he’s to blame for the increasing gas rates.”
Following Trump’s endorsement of the gas tax suspension, fuel prices increased significantly, with averages reaching $4.51 per gallon for gasoline and $5.66 for diesel, as reported by AAA on Wednesday.
Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, expressed support for the suspension, emphasizing the need for lower costs: “High gas prices will inevitably raise grocery prices and other essentials.” The proposal could save consumers 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel.
On Monday, Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri introduced a bill for the gas tax suspension, allowing for an initial freeze of 90 days, with the possibility of extending it if high prices persist.
While gas tax suspension garners bipartisan support, other legislators are exploring different avenues for tackling rising prices. Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas suggested that year-round access to E-15 fuel could be more effective: “E-15 might lower prices by about 30 to 40 cents per gallon over the year.” This inexpensive ethanol-blended gasoline faces restrictions during summer due to EPA regulations.
Discussions among lawmakers are also highlighting the necessity to maintain pressure on Iran despite rising fuel costs. Representative Bacon voiced a stronger stance, stating, “The Iranian people deserve better, but their government poses a significant threat. For over four decades, they have been our enemy.” He asserted that reducing pressure on Iran could lead to even greater dangers.
Bacon concluded with a warning about a potential nuclear-armed Iran being a threat not just to the U.S., but to the entire region.
