Florida School Board Member Likens Charlie Kirk to Hitler: 'Racist Bigot'

Edwin Ferguson, a Democrat and member of the Palm Beach County School Board in Florida, recently defended a teacher’s controversial comments following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. He labeled Kirk as a “racist paranoid” and drew a comparison to Hitler, stating, “I haven’t heard anyone say I missed Adolf Hitler yet.”

“In recent days, I’ve been contacted a lot by people expressing concerns over teachers worrying about losing their educational certificates because of this incident. [sic] Until last week, I was unaware of the comments related to Charlie Kirk,” Ferguson admitted.

However, he noted that he researched Kirk and criticized supervisors for a warning letter from the Florida Department of Education (DOE) that urged educators to be cautious in their responses after Kirk’s death.

“The DOE sent a letter to supervisors, cautioning them to remind staff to be careful, as they could risk losing their educational certification. This was prompted by feelings of distress among students and parents, mentioning the consequences,” he explained.

“As a teacher, I don’t consider myself a racist – I mean, a racist paranoid – unless you’re feeling offended as a parent or teacher.

“When we talk about the Holocaust, I haven’t heard anyone from the Jewish community express a longing for Adolf Hitler. His toxic rhetoric has significantly harmed society, and we must never forget that,” he stated.

“What I learned about Mr. Kirk relates to the experiences of Black individuals in our country. It’s certainly something that makes me say, ‘I’m sorry he’s gone, but he didn’t effectively use his voice,’” said Ferguson, who is Black.

“So that’s just my two cents,” he added, advising educators, “You should express yourselves, but do so respectfully and avoid making discriminatory remarks towards him or anyone else who might be sensitive to that.”

His comments came after a letter from Florida Education Commissioner Aanastasios Kamoutsas last week, who promised to review “all educators involved in this sleazy and sanctionable behavior” that celebrated Kirk’s assassination.

“This memorandum is meant to remind supervisors and educators that they’re held to a higher standard as civil servants,” the memo stated.

“We must collectively uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ensure Florida classrooms remain safe and conducive to academic success for all students,” Kamoutsas added, urging, “Govern yourselves accordingly.”
