Bill Simmons Discusses Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension

Bill Simmons, the CEO of The Ringer, recently commented on the suspension of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel. He criticized the “Maga Gang,” with Kimmel alleging that they’ve hit a “new low” regarding the characterization of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Brendan Kerr, the Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), urged Disney, ABC’s parent company, to confront the ongoing controversy. According to Simmons, there are reports indicating that some ABC executives, who believed Kimmel didn’t overstep, are now anxious about potential backlash from the Trump administration.

Kerr has been appointed by both Trump and Biden, maintaining a unique position in regards to the current political landscape.

Simmons referenced his long-standing friendship with Kimmel, noting an expression of support. He suggested that the focus on a possible merger between Nexstar and Tegna might be influencing the situation, labeling Kimmel’s suspension as “censorship,” rather than an example of “cancellation culture.”

“Kimmel still has the opportunity to express himself,” Simmons remarked, adding that he hopes Kimmel’s show continues and ABC stands by him. He expressed some uncertainty, however, voicing a belief that the censorship issue may be overstated for now.

Following Kimmel’s comments, the FBI and Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed concerns regarding the radicalization of left-wing ideology and shared details about Kirk, a transgender woman who was biologically male and in a relationship with someone transitioning to female.

Nexstar Media Group, which owns several television stations, announced that they will be pre-empting Kimmel’s show on ABC channels due to his recent comments, suggesting this could be for an extended period as they replace his segments with different programming.

Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, was tragically shot last week during an event in Utah. His death has sparked widespread mourning across the nation.

A funeral for Kirk is set to take place on September 21st at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
