Ocasio-Cortez Rejects Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., voiced her opposition on Friday to a resolution celebrating the life and contributions of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was killed on September 10 while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University.

During her address on the House floor, she criticized the resolution, suggesting it was motivated by partisan interests rather than a genuine effort to bring people together. After expressing her condolences regarding Kirk’s assassination, she highlighted that the resolution might have caused distress for those who have suffered through periods of discrimination, pointing to the painful legacy of systemic prejudice that continues in various forms today.

“It’s essential to clarify who Charlie Kirk was,” Ocasio-Cortez remarked. She referred to his controversial views on civil rights, stating that he believed the law granting Black Americans the right to vote was flawed. Furthermore, she cited his response following the violent attack on Paul Pelosi and his claims about having authority over Jewish communities, which she deemed misguided and ignorant. “His ideology aimed to disenfranchise many Americans,” she added, contrasting it with the resolution’s supposed message of unity.

Democratic Opposition

Alongside Ocasio-Cortez, 57 other House Democrats also voted against the resolution, including notable figures like Ilhan Omar and Maxine Waters. Contrastingly, 95 Democrats supported the resolution, with leadership from Hakeem Jeffries and Katherine Clark among them. The resolution described Kirk as a committed Christian, husband, and father, celebrating his establishment of Turning Point USA as a testament to the First Amendment.

In addition to condemning Kirk’s murder, the resolution acknowledged all forms of political violence, urging Americans to reject such acts and promote constructive dialogue.

Comments by Charlie Kirk

AOC challenged specific past remarks made by Kirk. In an episode of a podcast, he previously suggested that civil rights laws had unintended consequences that led to new forms of segregation. Kirk claimed there was a misunderstanding around his discussion of civil rights, asserting that he sought to clarify his position, which he acknowledged was provocative.

Kirk elaborated on his belief that civil rights legislation was initially aimed at fostering equality but ended up creating bureaucratic means that perpetuated racial divides. He referenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideals while arguing that some outcomes of civil rights laws did not align with the original intent of unity.

Controversial Statements

Ocasio-Cortez also pointed out Kirk’s commentary following the violent attack on Paul Pelosi in late 2022, where he seemed to suggest the need for “great patriots” to intervene in such situations, which drew backlash. Kirk condemned violence yet questioned policies that allowed certain offenders to be released without bail, framing it as a societal issue that needed examination.

Ultimately, Kirk’s comments and the resulting discussions have continued to stir debate over his legacy and the implications of his viewpoints, as well as the broader conversation about civil rights and political violence in America.
