Senate Leaders Discuss Government Shutdown Threat

WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed to Breitbart News that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer appears to be guiding the country toward a government shutdown, referring to the situation as “Schumer’s closure.”

“It’s clear that Chuck Schumer is looking to shut things down. He seems eager to satisfy his left-wing supporters,” Thune said. “He’s often criticized government shutdowns and their negative impact. We need to prevent this and have offered a clean spending bill to him. But if we end up in a shutdown, it won’t be surprising.”

Thune emphasized the importance of allowing the government to function through individual spending bills. “What we’re trying to achieve, with Mike Johnson and House Republicans, is to give the government time to fund itself properly,” he added.

“We’ll require a short-term continuing resolution to ensure funding continues. We’re pushing for these individual spending bills, but we need a temporary measure to keep things running. It’s up to Schumer now—hopefully, he’ll understand that shutting down the government is not a wise move.”

There’s a shared goal among Republicans in both chambers of Congress to pass 12 spending bills that would keep the government funded until mid-November. While the House can pass these with a simple majority, Senate rules necessitate a 60-vote margin. That means some Democrats, perhaps even more than seven, will need to collaborate with Republicans to avoid a shutdown.

Thune is optimistic about Democrats from swing states being on board, mentioning figures like John Fetterman (D-PA), Reuben Gallego (D-AZ), and others, despite Schumer’s leadership stance. “Even Democrats like Gary Peters (D-MI) and Tina Smith (D-MN) might consider working against the shutdown,” he speculated.

The House successfully passed a funding bill last Friday, although Senate Democrats, excluding Fetterman, have generally opposed the House’s measure. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) also supported the bill, highlighting its bipartisan backing.

“I really hope some Democrats recognize how foolish Schumer’s shutdown approach is. It could become very unpopular,” Thune remarked, pointing out that for Democrats facing reelection or considering retirement, Schumer’s tactics might not align with their best interests.

He expressed cautious optimism, stating, “We’ll see where the votes land. But I hope Senate members can look beyond the political games. From my experience, they often operate within a hierarchical structure.”

At this moment, Congressional Democrats—aside from Schumer, Fetterman, and Golden—are seen as leading the charge toward a potential shutdown, largely due to pressure from their more radical bases, Thune argued.

“Democrats need to figure out their identity,” he said. “Right now, it seems they’re desperate, with their identity tied to the demands of left-wing activists, and unfortunately, their leaders are often overwhelmed by that pressure.”
